# Referral Code Overview

A referral code is a unique identifier that lets a user refer others to your program. Codes are typically generated as `FIRSTNAMELASTNAME` (for example, `JOHNDOE`), making them short and easy to share verbally or type into a sign-up form.

Each user receives one referral code per program they are enrolled in.

## When to use referral codes

Referral codes are useful in contexts where share links can't reliably carry attribution, such as mobile apps or browsers that block tracking cookies. Adding a *Referral Code* field to your sign-up form lets a referred user enter the code directly, and the referral can still be attributed to the original referrer.

For more on how this complements share links, see the Share Links Overview.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://integrations.impact.com/brand-api-reference/advocate-api-reference-v1/reference/referral-code-overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
