# Referral Overview

A Referral records the relationship between two users: the referrer (the customer advocate who shared a referral) and the referee (the friend who acted on it).

Key aspects of a referral:

* Each referral links exactly one referrer to one referee.
* A referrer can have many referrals; a referee can only be referred once (see [Account Overview](/brand-api-reference/advocate-api-reference-v1/reference/account-overview.md)).
* Referrals are the basis on which rewards are calculated and issued.
