# Integrate with Shopify Agentic Checkout

Shopify's *Agentic* sales channel lets AI agents such as Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot recommend your products and, with direct checkout, complete the purchase inside the AI chat itself. Because the shopper never lands on your Shopify storefront, impact.com can't attribute these orders to a partner. This guide explains why, how it compares to other AI checkout models, and what you can do about it.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Tip:** To make sure your partners get credit for AI-driven sales, [turn off direct checkout](#turn-off-direct-checkout) in Shopify. Your products stay discoverable by AI agents, and shoppers can complete their purchases on your storefront where impact.com can track it.
{% endhint %}

## Understand the attribution gap

When a shopper buys your product through an AI agent with direct checkout, the transaction happens on the AI platform's own interface. Shopify acts only as the backend, connecting your catalog and checkout to the AI agent through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Your storefront is never rendered, so:

* **Client-side tracking doesn't run.** The impact.com app's tracking script, thank-you page pixels, and other browser tags don't load or fire.
* **No click ID reaches the order.** In-chat purchases don't use tracking links, and the AI platform can't read the impact.com cookie set by an earlier partner click. No click ID is passed to the Shopify order.
* **Orders aren't linked to a partner.** Shopify still records the order under the *Agentic* sales channel, but it can't link the order to a partner.
* **Custom parameters aren't passed through.** AI platforms don't let you append third-party tracking parameters to their native checkout flows.

For example, a shopper reads a partner's blog post and clicks the partner's tracking link. Days later, they find the same product in Google AI Mode and buy it in the chat. The partner doesn't receive credit for the sale.

## Compare AI checkout models

Not every AI agent handles checkout the same way. With referral checkout, the AI agent sends the shopper to your storefront to pay, so standard tracking works.

| Feature | Direct checkout (Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot) | Referral checkout (ChatGPT) | Standard Shopify web checkout |
| ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| **Where the purchase happens** | Inside the AI chat | Your storefront | Your storefront |
| **Shopify backend** | Agentic storefronts / UCP | Storefront API | Online Store / Storefront API |
| **Browser pixels and tags**    | ❌ Don't fire                                      | ✅ Fire after the redirect   | ✅ Fire                        |
| **Partner attribution**        | ❌ Not tracked                                     | ✅ Tracked                   | ✅ Tracked                     |

You can keep direct checkout on and accept that these orders won't be attributed to your partners, or turn it off to route AI-driven purchases through your storefront so tracking works.

## Keep direct checkout on

Shoppers can buy your products directly in AI chats, but those orders won't credit a partner. Consider letting your partners know, since a shopper they referred can complete their purchase through an AI agent instead.

## Turn off direct checkout

To keep your products discoverable by AI agents while sending your shoppers to your storefront to pay:

1. In your Shopify admin, select **Sales channels** → **Agentic**.
2. Turn off **Allow Shopify to manage for me**.
3. Select the AI channel you want to change: [**Google AI Mode and Gemini**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/google) or [**Microsoft Copilot**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/microsoft).
4. Turn off **Direct checkout**.
5. Select **Save**.

Your products stay discoverable in the AI channel. When a shopper asks to buy your product in an AI chat, the AI agent links them to your storefront checkout instead of taking payment itself. Once they land on your store, the impact.com app tracks the order as usual.

Turning off direct checkout also keeps your other storefront tracking, like analytics and ad pixels, and any checkout customizations working for AI-driven sales.

## Work with partner-hosted AI agents

When a partner hosts the AI shopping agent themselves, they receive the order details and can submit the conversion to impact.com, including the order ID, so impact.com can match it to your Shopify orders. In this case, the partner can still receive credit. Contact your customer success manager (CSM) if you work with a partner that offers agentic checkout.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://integrations.impact.com/integration-guides/for-brands/plugin-integrations/e-commerce/integrate-with-shopify/integrate-with-shopify-agentic-checkout.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
